A Cover Letter? Really?
Do I really need a cover letter? Most HR Managers will say they have to go through hundreds if not thousands of resumes each year and rarely have time to scan, let alone fully read, a cover letter. So are they really needed? The answer is an unequivocal “Yes!” A well written cover letter will directly impact how an HR Manager actually views your resume.
But if an HR Manager isn’t likely going to read most cover letters, why should you write one? The answer is simple. HR Managers do not read most resumes either. Over 95% of resumes submitted for one position are quickly tossed aside along with the associated cover letters. If, however, the first few lines of your resume intrigue the HR Manager to read further, your cover letter will also very likely be read. A cover letter tells a HR Manager several things.
First, it says that you cared enough about the position to sit down and write a few paragraphs explaining why you’d be the perfect candidate. Every reader has an ego and a nice cover letter says that your intention is to impress. You would be hard stretched to find an HR Manager out there who won’t appreciate the enthusiasm and the effort you took to take the extra step.
Second, a cover letter gives you the opportunity to show off your personality and to express your individual strengths in ways a resume simply cannot. A cover letter should be a complementary document. It should be a welcome invitation, a professional icebreaker.
Third, a cover letter gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your attention to detail, your ability to follow simple directions, and your sincere interest in the company for which you are applying. Remember, an employer wants a need fulfilled and cares deeply about finding the correct person to fulfill it. If you show that you care enough to go the extra mile, you’ve already begun the process of building their trust and interest.
